Teaching Philosophy

As an educator, my top priority is to provide mentorship to my students through dance, giving them access to tools & values applicable both in and out of the studio.

My goal when teaching is to:

Positively influence and inspire my students. I often say that I am only a product of my strongest influences. As an educator, I aim to influence and inspire students to explore the world they’ve created for themselves, using the medium of movement. Dance provides a therapeutic lens through which we can trash, re-create, and indulge in our surroundings. I feel obligated to share this with students whose greatest potential is to make change in the world.

Communicate in a caring and nurturing way. In technique classes, I strive to create an encouraging environment where students are given constructive feedback, rather than reprimanding critiques. I intend for students to work within their body’s natural limits and proper alignment, improving through progressive overload. The goal is to create kinesthetic awareness, rather than mimicking an aesthetic.

Encourage individuality and passion. Personal expression and understanding the building blocks of an artistic process is our ultimate goal. I urge students to use their passion for dance as a driving force for both technical improvement and artistic growth. I want my students to find what influences them both inside and outside of the studio, to develop their own artistic taste and aesthetic, eventually refining the details of their innate, individual movement vocabulary.
